The facts are staggering: every day, 1 in 3 families in America struggle to afford diapers for their children.

Diaper need is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy, and it’s a reality in our city. There are over 16,000 diaper-wearing children in the Greater Cincinnati area experiencing diaper need each month. At an average rate of six diapers per day per child (and more than double that for newborns), diaper-wearing children in poverty in the United States require more than 5.8 billion diapers annually to keep them clean, dry and healthy. For this reason, we started the only diaper bank serving the entire Greater Cincinnati area to fill the diaper need gap in our community. By assisting families during what can be one of the most challenging times in a parent’s life, we’re working to build a strong community for the future.

People say diaper need will disappear when pigs fly. We say welcome to Cincinnati: where pigs fly, we put chili on our spaghetti, and diaper need is being eliminated, one baby at a time.

The Mission

Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank partners with local social service agencies to provide diapers to low-income families while raising awareness of the basic health need for diapers. Our mission is to eliminate the existence of diaper need in our community so that ALL babies have a chance to be healthy, happy, and safe.

What is Diaper Need?

Diaper Need is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to remain clean, dry and healthy. Did you know diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps or obtained through WIC? Not having diapers means parents can’t leave their children with a childcare provider, most of which require a day's worth of disposable diapers for each child in advance. That means parents can't go to work or school. Not having diapers leads to more time between changes (sometimes longer than 24 hours), which causes severe diaper rash, urinary tract and staph infections and other health problems. Not having diapers means that babies who cry because their diaper is dirty will cry that much more, increasing stress for parents struggling to make ends meet. Recently, not having enough diapers has been shown to be the number one indicator of maternal depression, and adversely affects a mother’s feeling of self-worth, as well as the mother-child bond.

The Numbers

The numbers don't lie: Cincinnati's babies are hurting. For a city our size, we are 4th in the nation for highest childhood poverty levels at 44.3% (behind only Cleveland, Detroit and Memphis). 37% of children under 5 years old are living in poverty and experiencing some degree of diaper need. This means over 16,000 children in the Greater Cincinnati area need our help!

Make Cincinnati Proud

Our amazing city is one of the fastest-growing, most desirable places to live in America. Travel blog Jetsetter called Cincinnati one of the 15 best places to visit in 2015 and Fortune said the city has one of the top five up-and-coming downtowns. The New York Times has compared the transformation of Over-the-Rhine to Greenwich Village. In the midst of moving forward we cannot leave our children behind. ALL Cincinnatians, no matter their age, deserve to feel the success of our city's revitalization.
